Tinsmiths of Kuching
Dec 28th, 2009 by Steven
Personally, compared to KL’s Chinatown, I find that Kuching’s Chinatown has more character … it has retained much of the ‘old charm’ and economic activities of the years gone by. When you visit Kuching, make it a point to explore the areas around China Street, India Street and Carpenter Street. Like the shoplots along the heritage row of Gambier Street fronting the Waterfront, the 2-storey pre-war shoplots in China Street were built during the Colonial days (when the White Rajahs administered the state).
China Street is where you find goldsmiths and tinsmiths still plying their trade. In years to come, there will probably be hardly any young people pursuing a ‘career’ as tinsmiths.
