TESCO Closes for Friday Prayers
Jul 13th, 2009 by Steven
I didn’t know that UK-based TESCO through its local partner Sime Darby has opened a hypermarket in PAS-controlled Kelantan until I saw the store from the air flying in from Kuala Lumpur. This outlet is reported to be the first TESCO store which has its name in Jawi. As Kelantan is an Islamic state, thisstore only carries halal products … no alcoholic drinks, iof course. Was also told that business is suspended during the Jum’ah (Friday Muslim Prayer service).
Will Carrefour be next to set up shot in Kota Bharu … time will tell.

Took this photo from a moving car as we headed to Wakaf Bharu for dinner. Can you make out the Jawi calligraphy (and pronunciation) which depicts TESCO?
