The Hindu community celebrates the Festival of Lights - Deepavali. I took the opportunity to visit the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Dhevasthanam along Jalan Tun HS Lee (formerly High Street) in Chinatown. Originally erected on another site in 1873, it is probably the oldest Hindu temple in Malaysia.

The yearly Kathina ceremony is celebrated at the end of the Rains Retreat (Vassa). It is a celebration of the spirit of giving (dana), of generosity and commitment to support the Sangha. An act that gains great merits for oneself, family members and departed loved ones.

The Kathina ceremony started at 1.30pm. The devotees, which included many taking part for the first time, gathered for a procession which took them round the temple compound.

After the tak bart ceremony, the reverend monks adjourned to the dining hall for lunch. The devotees waited till the reverends had finished their meals before helping themselves to the Thai vegetarian laksa and glutinous rice served with mango.
