Sadness Amidst The Good Feel

We have sent a cosmonaut to space.
We have Malaysian parachutists jumping over the North Pole.
We once have the distinction of laying claims to having the world’s tallest structure.
We have the world’s biggest tankard.
We also have lots of ‘superlative’ entries in The Malaysia Book of Records.
As Malaysians, we should be proud of our feats and world records. But what good is all these when one comes across scenes like the one pictured here? She’s probably not the only one; there are many others like her in dire straits.
You may say that our elected government is in no position to look after all its citizens’ welfare. But I’m sure something could be done, if there’s a will and desire, to mitigate their plight.
I don’t know who she is. I don’t know her background. I don’t know where she stays. I don’t know whether she has any children. But I know she can to sit for hours at that spot, with a plastic cup in hand, asking for alms from passers-by.
