Tanjung Malim’s Yik Mun ‘Pau’ Sold in KL
Oct 28th, 2007 by Steven
Tanjung Malim is not only home to Proton City and Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (previously Sultan Idris Teacher’s Training College), it is also home to the famous halal pau sold at the town’s Yik Mun Coffee Shop. The Hainanese family has been making pau (steamed wheat flour dumpling) since 1926.
It is said that royalties patronize the shop. So has Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman. Cartoonist Lat has also immortalized Yik Mun’s pau in his cartoon strips.
Yik Mun sells 4 types of pau – pau daging (beef), pau ayam (chicken), pau tau sar (red bean) and pau kaya. Nowadays, you can even get Yik Mun’s pre-packed ready-to-steam pau at supermarkets. Apart from its pau, Yik Mun is also known for its roasted coffee beans, and gone into producing 3-i-1 sachets.
The owner has ventured out to set up branch outlets in the Klang Valley – 1 Utama Old Wing, Mid Valley and Hartamas Shopping Centre.
Recently I was at Hartamas Shopping Centre for a dinner appointment. As I was early, I decided to drop in at Yik Mun – located near the Citi Supermarket – for a cup of milk tea and traditional roti kahwin. This is one of those places where your cuppa is reminiscent of the teh and kopi served at kopitiam of the days gone by. The 2 pieces of toasted bread came with a thick slice of butter and kaya. I’d have ordered another set or the pau if not for the dinner appointment.
