Delightful Austrian Fare at Backofen
Aug 19th, 2007 by Steven
It’s been more than 2 years since I last dined at Backofen, a cosy little Austrian cafe in Desa Sri Hartamas. Back then, occasionally went there for lunch with my colleagues. We used to order different items to ‘share’ – with everyone having small bites of the dishes, including the desserts. However, I learnt that the original owner, an Austrian couple, had sold the business. Diners would probably remember seeing an Austrian lady in the cafe, who personally managed the business and kitchen staff.
Backofen – which means a ‘baking oven’ in Austrian – offers a wide variety of Austrian fare, from breakfast meals, sandwiches and soups to Viennese beef goulash, chicken stroganoff and spaghetti. The best part comes at the end, the desserts – a wide choice of cakes, tarts, etc. Or take away the scones and bread fresh from the oven.
Recently went there for dinner with my family. The place has not changed except for the renovation to accommodate more tables. More importantly, the new owner has maintained the standard of the food from the kitchen. The staff is friendly and service is fast and efficient. And prices are still reasonable as before.
My son, who ordered the Spaghetti Carbonara, commented that it is comparable to Italannies. Even my wife gave her thumbs up.
Check out Backofen for a delightful dining experience. The food is good, the place is quaint and cosy, and the food portions are large considering the reasonable prices.
