Craving for Ipoh Hor Fun
Aug 16th, 2007 by Steven
I know of folks who would make a day trip to Ipoh just to eat its famous Ipoh Hor Fun. Not me, though. So, where in Kuala Lumpur or Petaling Jaya can you find good, if not the best, Sar Hor Fun? I guess it’s difficult to nominate and vote for the ‘Best’ as we each have our own preference and taste. As the saying goes, one man’s meat is another man’s poison.
Years back, there used to be a stall in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, located in the corner shoplot which is now a Celcom service centre, which served excellent Hor Fun. I have no idea where it has shifted to.
In his blog, my brother, Patrick, says there’s a stall in Chinatown’s Petaling Street which, he declares, dishes out the best Sar Hor Fun. Well, I shall go there one of these days.
A couple of weekends back, went to this Restoran Ho Fun in Petaling Jaya’s SS2. They serve different varieties of Hor Fun. We ordered a bowl each of Ipoh Hor Fun, Chicken Hor Fun, and Sui-kow (prawn dumplings) Noodles. They charge RM4.80 for a small bowl, and RM5.30 for a big bowl.
The verdict? No complaints about the prawns and chicken, but the prawn-flavoured soup - the key ingredient - could be better. So the race is still wide open.
Restoran Ho Fun is located along Jalan SS2/63 near the Glutton Square (Wai Seik Kai) which has staked its claim as PJ’s Gastronomic Hub. The SS2/63 shop is a branch, with the main outlet on SS2/10, near Restoran Kayu Nasi Kandar.
