Charms of Asian Cuisine
Aug 12th, 2007 by Steven
The whole family will usually go out for dinner on Saturdays. Yesterday was one of those days when we departed from our usual practice. Kellie had to attend a wedding dinner, and her brother had gone to watch the movie, Rush Hour 3 (with Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker teaming up again). He had his dinner with his friends before coming home. BTW, Rush Hour 3 didn’t get good reviews.
So, that left my wife and I to go ‘pak toh-ing’. We didn’t go strolling in the park under the stars; we went to the 1-Utama shopping mall.
For dinner, we decided on eating at Charms, which is located on the 2nd floor in the New Wing. The place was packed with diners. We were shown to a table inside the shop, which was placed against the wall. This meant the both of us had to sit side by side, facing the wall. How romantic, ha, ha.
A popular item on the menu is the Lamb Charmers served with buttered rice and lettuce, where diners actually cook their own dinner. This menu comes with 4 pieces of lamb chops, and diners grill the meat over a miniature Balinese brazier using charcoal fire. We didn’t order this; instead we had Cucur Bawang with Charms Dip, Sting-ray Curry with rice, and Fried Loh See Fun with Wrapped Omelette.
BTW, there’s another Charms Cafe at The Curve in Mutiara Damansara.

The Cucur Bawang is good to eat. The onions are deep fried with sliced vegetables like cucumber and carrot. You have to eat them with the Charms Dip, a concoction of pounded green chilli, lime, sugar and other ingredients which we couldn’t make out. Though it was meant to be a starter, it came way after we had started on the main items. (RM4.90)

I’d expected the noodles to be ‘wrapped’ inside the omelette as shown in the menu, but it turned out to be otherwise; as it was just placed on top of the noodles. Nothing extraordinary and it’s a bit too oily to my liking. (RM8.90)

The Sting-ray Curry was good, with the mix of curry powder and spices. Not to spicy. Charms also offers Fish Head Curry on its menu. (RM14.90)
