Cameron Highlands is the largest of the hill resorts in Malaysia. Located at an altitude of 1,829m in the north-western edge of the state of Pahang, it was discovered by surveyor William Cameron in 1885. British planters soon realized that the mountain range was fertile, and given that tea was a prized commodity among the colonies, they decided to grow tea on the slopes.
Today, apart from tea, Cameron Highlands also supplies large amount of local vegetables to major cities of Malaysia and Singapore. Fruits including strawberries are also grown on the terraced slopes. Large quantities of flowers and roses are also exported.
These photos were taken at the Bharat Tea Estate, located along the main road from Ringlet to the main town at Tanah Rata. After Boh Tea, Bharat Tea is the second largest tea producer in Malaysia. It markets its exquisite highland tea under the Cameron Valley Tea brand.
