To photographers, cameras and lenses are their bread and butter tools. But to artists like this ‘commercial’ artist, brushes and paints, charcoal pencils as well as art papers are their tools to creating photo-like images.
You find many of these portrait artists at the Night Bazaar Square in downtown Chiang Mai. They reproduce images from photos or one can sit there as they paint your portrait. Their tagline is ‘Photos Without Films’. Observing them painting reminds me of our local artists at Kuala Lumpur’s Central Market.
The Night Bazaar Square is located along the street where the daily night market is. The night market is probably the place to be at night– the melting pot, so to speak, Chances are, you would bump into familiar faces (fellow tourists) that you met earlier in the day at the frequently-visited tourist spots or restaurants you had your meals. It seems as though everyone converges here for Thai food and bargain shopping. Global icons like Starbucks, McDonald, KFC and Baskin Robbins are strategically located along this long street.
The Night Bazaar Square is actually a huge food court-cum-night market. Within its compound are gallery stalls where you find handicrafts, clothes and imitation goods. A few of the lots are occupied by the artists.
